2009 - 2010 Grant Recipients

As a community foundation, we take a broad view of what a community is and what it needs to succeed. You'll find our grants support everything from shelter and care for those most in need, to recreation, the arts and the environment. Click on any project below for more information.

Community Impact Grants


John McGivney Children's Centre - Specialized Feeding Room

$10,000

Many children with disabilities require specialized support to transition from tube feeding to oral feeding and to have their nutrition needs met. A grant from the Community Foundation will pay for the creation of a family feeding room, where parents, can work with staff in a controlled, safe, private and homelike setting.

St. John's Ambulance - Therapy Dog Program

$2,000

St. John Ambulance Dog Therapy Windsor Therapy Dog volunteers (dog and handler) regularly visit acute and long term care facilities, hospitals, palliative care, rehabilitation and children's health centres, to visit clients of all ages, who can benefit from the unconditional love of dogs. At present there is a waiting list for their services. A grant from the Community Foundation will enable the organization to recruit more dog and handler volunteers.

Scouts Canada - Windsor-Essex ScoutReach

$5,000

Scout ReachA grant from the Community Foundation will help Scoutreach to provide subsidies to as many as 750 young people, enabling them to participate in leadership training, environmental stewardship, diversity awareness, personal fitness and health programs through Scouts.



The Canadian Mental Health Association - Windsor-Essex Branch

$2,500

A grant from the Community Foundation will pay for the printing and disctribution of a Newcomer's Guide for Mental Health. Produced in partnership with several area agencies, the guide will help recent immigrants access community supports and solutions to many of the challenges facing them.

CAW Local 200 Computers for Kids - KidConnect

$4,000

Funds from the Community Foundation will pay for the purchase of eight laptop computers to be used by children who are coping with the unfortunate circumstance of a life threathening illness. With these with laptop computers the children can continue to learn, socialize and explore their world.

Essex Public School - Accessible Community Playground

$5,000

A new school was recently completed in Essex, however, there is presently no funding for school playground equipment. A grant from the Community Foundation will help pay to install a 6-12 wheelchair accessible play structure, as well as trees and benches. The structure will have a number of features that provide sensory stimutaion as well as encourage a variety of active and interactive play activities.

Forest Glade Baseball - Facility Improvements

$5,000

Forest Glade Baseball has been a fixture in their community for 30 years. Funds from the Community Foundation will help the league complete improvements to their diamonds and batting cage, making them more usable and accessible to children in Forest Glade.

Kinsmen Club of Harrow - Colchester Harbour Park Accessible Playground

$5,000

As part of a larger Harbor Front Park development, Funds from the Community Foundation will help pay for a fully accessible playground, creating space in Colchester for children with physical or developmental disabilities to play and explore.

The Migrant Worker Community Program - Building Cultural Bridges

$3,000.00

A grant from the Community Foundation will help pay for the Building Cultural Bridges Project. Through this initiative, migrant workers will be better integrated into the culture, spiritual, and civic life of Leamington.

Provincial Marine Amherstburg Re-enactment - Aboriginal Encampment

$2,000.00

As part of the 200th Anniversary Celebration of the War of 1812, the Provincial Marine Amherstburg Re-enactment Unit will host an authentic Aboriginal encampment on Boblo Island. Funds from the Community Foundation will help bring history to life as guests explore the campsite and interact with the aboriginals who are participating.

The AKO - Improvements for Partnership

$4,000.00

The Alpha Kai Omega Fraternity has a long and rich history of supporting youth sport in Windsor-Essex. A grant from the Community Foundation will help pay for much needed repairs to their building and facilitate a partnership with a local scout troop.

The Youth and Family Resource Network - Community Nourishment Partnership

$2,000.00

Funds from the Community Foundation will help to establish the first Community Garden outside the City of Windsor. It will be part of the Community Nourishment Partnership which includes: 1) healthy foods education and shopping program, 2) the community garden, and, 3) a community kitchen.

KidStart Mini-Grants


Filling Buckets

Grade Three students from Wm. G. Davis Elementary have come up with three ways to care for their community. Students will be bringing treat bags to a Friendship Day at the Seniors building in their neighbourhood. They are also preparing over 75 Birthday Bags for the mothers and children who are staying at Hiatus House. Finally, the students are planting flowers to create a reading garden at the community library. Here's what they had to say... "Even though we are young, we can do things to help others." "If we do these things they woud be so happy that someone remembered them." "When we fill someone's bucket, our buckets get filled too. It can make people feel like they want to fill a bucket too!"

Comfort for Shelter Dogs

Talbot Trail Grade 2 ClassA Grade Two class at Talbot Trail Elementary is making special beds for the dogs at the Humane Society by hand sewing and tying fabric together. These cozy creations will then go with the dog to their forever home. The class is also raising funds for the Humane Society by selling freezies and frozen yogurt during recess.



Community Footpath Preservation

Two French Immersion classes at Kingsville Public School are preserving and enhancing the footpath that connects their school to the Chrysler Canada Greenway. The students will be installing benches, trash and recycling bins as well as bird and bat houses. They have partnered with the Essex Region Conservation Authourity and to restore many of the native plants and animals to the woodlot.

Get Back to Nature

A Grade 2/3 class at Wm. G. Davis is bring healthy food and a natural environment to their neighbourhood. The students are partnering with Essex Region Conservation Authourity and other community groups to put benches in their local park and to plant several new trees. They are also planting a community garden in parnership with the seniors who live next to the park. The students and seniors will share in both the work of the garden and the harvest.

Sharing Garden

A Grade One class at Prince Edward Elementary is planting a community vegetable garden. The students want to "help people in our community by growing food to share." They have partnered with their neighbours to care for the garden and share the harvest with families in need.

Leamington & District Half Century Centre - Roof Repairs

$1,000

The Half Century Centre has been experiencing leaks in their roof, directly above the main activity room. Funds from the Community Foundation will pay to repair the leak and the damage that had been done tot the flooring.

The Little Tomato Theatre - Orchestra Dividers

The Little Tomato Theatre produces shows with up to 100 budding artists between the ages of 6 and 18. Funds from the Community Foundation will pay for much needed orchestra dividers to be used at upcoming shows.

The Mayor's Youth Advisory Council - Smoke Free Sport Fields

$500.00

In partnership with the Health Unit and area School Boards, the Mayor's Youth Advisory Council is leading Tabacco Free Sports and Recreation Initiative. Funds from the Community Foundation helped pay for printing and distribution of over 30,000 surveys that are being completed by area students.

Architectural Conservancy of Ontario - Doors Open 2010

$1,000.00

Funds from the Community Foundation helped relaunch Doors Open after a one year hiatus. The grant allowed seventeen of Windsor's finest heritage sites will open their doors for FREE public tours on September 26th.

Rose City Athletic Organization - Bullying Intervention

$750.00

Funds from the Community Foundation helped to pay for a multi-day seminar for educators of crisis intervention and personal empowerment. Participants learned how to help youth manage conflict in ways that are more positive.
